There’s something wonderfully suspicious about an artist calling their debut release project_0. It suggests either the beginning of an elaborate masterplan or a folder somebody accidentally exported from their laptop at three in the morning. With Philadelphia producer _ophelioo, thankfully, it feels much closer to the former.
Behind the name is Nigel Naveed, a producer who started messing around with GarageBand in 2018 before eventually graduating to Logic Pro, remixes and the inevitable years spent disappearing down electronic music rabbit holes. project_0 is his first official solo statement, and while it’s only two tracks long, there’s enough happening inside it to suggest _ophelioo isn’t particularly interested in making polite background music.
Intero is the introduction to that world, and appropriately it doesn’t feel desperate to explain itself. Electronic music is littered with producers who mistake atmosphere for simply chucking reverb over everything until it sounds like the nightclub is located at the bottom of a municipal swimming pool. _ophelioo has a better understanding of space than that.
The house foundations give Intero something physical to cling to while the production reaches towards something more cinematic and uneasy. That balance is important. _ophelioo wants to create cryptic music, but cryptic doesn’t have to mean impenetrable. There’s still enough rhythmic immediacy to drag you through the door before the stranger stuff starts rearranging the furniture.
Then comes Mona Lisa, where the project begins revealing more of its personality. The production feels more assured here, with _ophelioo’s interest in energetic electronic music rubbing, more reggae tones pulse through. That’s an interesting place for a new producer to operate.
More importantly, Mona Lisa doesn’t sound like somebody simply copying whichever electronic artist happened to dominate their Spotify recommendations that week. Naveed says his influences come more from genres, atmospheres and concepts than individual musicians, and that philosophy makes sense when you hear the results. There are recognisable pieces of house and electronic music throughout, but they’re being assembled as part of _ophelioo’s own developing language.
The word developing is important, though.
Across these two tracks there are moments where atmosphere seems slightly more developed than identity. The production is accomplished and the aesthetic is intriguing, but _ophelioo now needs a few unmistakable fingerprints — sounds, rhythmic choices, vocal treatments or production quirks that make you know it’s him within ten seconds.
That’s brutally difficult in electronic music because everyone has access to extraordinary production tools now. Being technically good isn’t enough anymore. Thousands of people can make a kick drum sound enormous. The interesting question is what you do once you’ve made it enormous.
There are also occasions where _ophelioo could afford to be less restrained. If you’re selling us darkness, cinematic imagery and philosophical weirdness, take the bloody handbrake off occasionally. Let something become genuinely uncomfortable. Break the rhythm. Introduce an ugly sound. Give us a moment that makes somebody on a dancefloor turn towards the speaker wondering what the hell just happened.
That isn’t criticism of the production quality; it’s precisely because the production is controlled that greater disruption could work.
And perhaps that’s what makes project_0 an appropriate title. It doesn’t pretend to be the finished version of _ophelioo. It’s the coordinates being entered before the journey properly starts.
What Naveed already possesses is curiosity. Starting on GarageBand in 2018, moving through different genres, learning Logic Pro and developing through remixes has evidently taught him that electronic production isn’t simply about assembling loops until something technically qualifies as a song. Intero establishes the environment; Mona Lisa begins showing us what might live inside it.
Two tracks aren’t enough to declare _ophelioo the next great electronic auteur, and anyone doing so should probably calm down. But they’re certainly enough to make you want to hear track three.
project_0 feels less like an arrival than a transmission: dark, energetic, deliberately cryptic and coming from somewhere we’re not entirely familiar with yet.
Keep the frequency open. This could get weird.
