The Deaf Institute was heaving tonight, and as A.A. Williams took to the stage, after an initial cheer, silence descended on the venue, an eerie moment before the first notes were played. Williams, confident and sure took a moment to set up her guitar and then the set began.
I was made aware of Williams’s work last year, having seen her performances pop up on Instagram, (for once the algorithm was being helpful) and I was instantly drawn in by those beautifully haunting vocals and eerie melodies. Many have compared Williams to Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, and whilst it is easy to see those similarities, Williams has her own style going on.
Each track is carefully constructed, and is delicately composed to take you on a journey. I could see people in the audience forget their whereabouts and become completely transfixed on what was unfolding on stage.
Williams also seems to be lost in her own compositions, and dramatically moves from note to note, seemingly unaware of the audiences presence, until the final note when the crowd emits cheers and enthusiastic rounds of applause. It seems inevitable that Williams will not be playing such intimate venues for much longer as her profile rises. This venue is perfect for such songs, that I fear could be lost in larger venues, so we must consider ourselves lucky to be witnessing this evening unfold.
The tour is lengthy and many shows back to back, Williams has an unbelievable work ethic that has started to pay off. We need more artists like Williams, anyone who can make you forget your surroundings just for a few hours, and the daily hustle and bustle, is a star in my eyes.
