London-based indie pop-rock artist Alex Reese has released his new track, ‘Back to the Stars (Albert Version)’. Now to be honest, I have no clue what the ‘Albert Version’ part means, but we won’t dwell on that.
The song is pretty basic, consisting of a cheery acoustic guitar melody with Reese’s vocals layered over it. I’ll be honest again: the recording of the vocals is a bit poor and could do with some work. The acoustic guitar, though, is clear and very bright. As the song progresses, multiple melodies and riffs build up more and more, layering over one another. You’d think by the time there are multiple melodies stacked on top of each other the track would seem thick or even a bit chaotic, but the guitars blend really well and stay clear throughout.
Lyrically, the title of the track (minus the ‘Albert Version’ part) is repeated numerous times throughout, constantly cirlcing back to it and reminding the listener of the main theme. It’s a bit difficult to understand what exactly Reese is trying to convey through the lyrics, with each line feeling like it belongs to a different topic. Objectively, it seems like a love song, with Reese singing from his perspective to a partner.
Reese’s catalogue looks like its expanding quickly, with a new release out just a week after this one, following an earlier release in 2026. All of the songs follow a similar acoustic guitar and vocal pattern, so I’d like to see how Alex Reese moves on going forwards – we’ll see if he decides to switch things up a bit moving forward
