Blackpool’s ALRIGHT have recently announced their debut EP, ‘It’s Not Orange’, out on the 27th of November. The first single from it, ‘Mind Your Head’, opens an exciting new chapter for the band and gives us a perfect insight into the sound and vibe of the EP, released exactly three months before the complete EP.
In typical ALRIGHT fashion, frontman Joe Darnell wastes no time going into his storytelling mode, in this song’s case about a night out at 16, delivered with his unapologetic Blackpool northern accent.
Backed by a steady, slightly swung drum beat and tense guitar line, the layers add up with harmonies and a strong, swung groove from Brad Mills’ low-end bass. Before a beat break, the track swells into the chorus, with the song title, ‘Read the Mind Your Head Sign’, repeating over and over again, referring to getting kicked out.
The single cover, featuring a bouncer against a backdrop of a ‘Mind Your Head’ sign, perfectly encapsulates the story told by Darnell.
After the first chorus, everything drops back out, leaving a tense, steady strumming of the lead guitar, with plenty of harmonies emphasising and highlighting Darnell’s vocals. Before you know it, we’re back into the catchy ‘Read the Mind Your Head Sign’ repeated chorus, further drilling the title into the listener. The song closes out with a middle 8 of intertwined melodies and lyrics, all happening at once, yet it never becomes too overpowering.
The track is bold and full of confidence, with hints of influences from Arctic Monkeys and The Enemy, yet ALRIGHT manage to shine their own unmistakable sound through. For fans of The Twang, The Reytons, and Reverend & The Makers, ‘Mind Your Head’ is a tune to listen to in preparation for their debut EP, ‘It’s Not Orange’.
