Aussie punk legends Amyl and the Sniffers returned to Manchester to play a sold out academy gig this weekend. On what has been a totally joyous week of live music in the city, with gig-goers spoilt for choice due to multiple gigs on each night across all venues. I am certain some hard decisions were made last week but it was clear that the Saturday night gig goers had one venue and one band on their mind!
The academy was packed, with some unlucky punters hoping to grab a last minute ticket at the box office. Since forming, Amyl and the Sniffers, fronted by the fabulous Amy Taylor, a true epitome of punk, the band can do no wrong, being the ‘must see’ on many a festival line-up this summer and it is clear to see why.
The new album ‘Cartoon Darkness’ is clearly familiar to this audience as they sing back all the words with gusto to ‘Doing in Me Head’. Taylor makes it very clear from the get go that all audience members are made to feel welcome, and after track two delivers a heart-felt speech about the current state of International politics, but ultimately allows their music to do the talking tonight.
The 2021 album ‘Comfort to me Classics’ proves hugely popular as Taylor garners a massive reaction as ‘Freaks to the Front’ encourages a member of the crowd to launch himself over the barrier, and many more to do the same, albeit unsuccessfully! There are parallels to be drawn here, and although Amyl have their own unique sound, you can hear early Green Day, Iggy Pop, and even Manchester’s very own Rude Club with Taylor reminding me of Jane Parker’s vocal style. .
he stand out tracks of the evening were ‘Some Mutts Can’t be Muzzled’ and ‘Guided by Angels’ which allows Taylor to show her potential as the next punk queen. Attending grassroots gigs over the years at Manchester venues, it is clear to see just how much an icon Taylor has become, with an increasing number of female fronted bands hoping to emulate the success of Amyl.
The band continue their European tour throughout November and more details can be found below.
