Athena Vortex 'Cautionary Love Tales' - EP Review

Athena Vortex ‘Cautionary Love Tales’ – EP Review

London solo artist Athena Vortex has released a brand new EP. It is ultimately a rock explosion mixed into 4 songs, which all tell a different story.

The first song on the EP is One. Up on first hearing the track, I immediately heard a similarity to Courtney Love. The way Athena uses her voice is extremely similar to Hole.

She jumps straight into the song with the vocals and instruments, gripping you as soon as the song begins. It has that pop-punk rhythm and instrumental. It really does sound like something from the early 2000s with a modern twist. For 2 minutes and 37 seconds you’re in Athena’s world and you won’t want to leave!

Next up is Doll. The way Athena sings in this track is quite similar to the first one. This song, to me, seems a lot about not being used by someone for their own pleasure, and she makes great points in this song about it. The use of the instruments enhances her anger in this track and makes it stand out more, leaving a powerful impression. I really like this track!

Third on the EP is Scarecrow. This has to be my favourite track on the EP. It opens with the sound of crows flying by and drops into a more gothic-rock vibe. I think the vocals on this track sound a bit more rushed and less in time with the tempo, but it doesn’t take away the talent you can hear from Athena.

I think if she slowed down the vocals and matched the tempo it would sound brilliant. The drums and guitar/bass shine through in this track and bring it to life.

The fourth and final track is Chess Game. This one has a more upbeat dynamic to it within the instrumental and suits Athena’s vocals perfectly. It is a very danceable track. I doubt there will be a time you listen to this and don’t tap along to the track or feel the energy flowing through your body. The whole song is extremely likeable, the only downside is that it ends abruptly. Why can’t it go on for longer?

Overall, this album is excellent and very enjoyable. I think there are some tracks that could do with a few changes. If Athena used her voice to channel the different emotions she felt I think this album would absolutely be one of the best.

Other than that Athena, has created something extremely entertaining. I highly suggest checking it out and support this amazing woman within the rock community!
