BETH GIBBONS LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

This evening was one of the most hotly anticipated gigs of Manchester’s Albert Hall calendar (and that is quite some feat considering the calibre of artists this venue plays host to!)

Tonight was the turn of singer song writer Beth Gibbons to entertain a very excitable Manchester audience, with the crowd tightly packed together, surely making this one of the venues busiest gigs, certainly the busiest I have seen the place for a while!

Gibbons owned the venue, with the light gently fading as she took to the stage, the atmosphere was electric. At the artist’s request, the bars were closed just before 9pm which was respectfully adhered to and the audience were in near silence anticipating the moment that the seemingly shy Gibbons turned round and sang the first line.

The voice was beautiful, and for someone who had never seen Beth Gibbons live before, a little unexpected. Her on stage presence was humble, yet the voice carried across the venue and when teamed with the talented band of musicians was breathtaking.

The set list mainly consisted of Gibbon’s solo work which included ‘Floating on a Moment’ and ‘Burden of Life’. The encore was the only time Portishead was played this evening with a gorgeous version of ‘Roads’ before Gibbons rounded off the evening with ‘Reaching Out’. All too soon it was over and the crowd descended onto the streets a Manchester, no doubt a little more lighthearted and fulfilled than they were just two hours ago.

The UK leg of the tour has been relatively brief with gigs in just Manchester, London and Edinburgh. The future of Portishead seems unknown but I am certain that a future solo tour or as part of the band, Beth Gibbons will continue to sell out venues all over.
