BLACK GRAPE LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

Black Grape kicked off their tour quite fittingly with a hometown gig at Manchester’s Albert Hall. The indie duo consisting of Happy Monday’s Shaun Ryder and rapper Paul ‘Kermit’ Leveridge. The band will play numerous venues around the UK, but tonight it was all about Manchester.]

Keeping in with the 90’s theme for the evening, support came from former Inspiral Carpets front man Tom Hingley and his band. Hingley is an incredible front man who really warmed up the audience with lively onstage antics, swinging his mic stand about and cavorting with his guitarist whilst somehow managing to showcase pretty impressive vocals simultaneously.

It was a treat to see the band perform Inspiral’s classics ‘This is how it feels’ and of course ‘Saturn Five’ which the band finished on and riled up the crowd ready for the main event.

As half nine approached that infamous broad Mancunian bellow was heard beyond the stage before Ryder and Kermit were unleashed onto this rowdy audience, bucket hats and plenty of paisley adorned, and for a moment it was like being back in the 90’s I imagine… (I was 9 in 1995, but you get the idea).

The natural camaraderie between the duo is highly entertaining, with Ryder puffing on a vape and adding even more smoke to the smoke filled stage (and blue lighting – a photographers dream innit!). Despite the challenges faces taking photos, the disco-esque lighting made for a fun filled set full of audience aimed banter, which let Ryders natural comedic talent shine.

The duo played the best of Black Grape, with plenty of hits to fill a setlist going back to when they formed in 1995. ‘Orange Head’ their latest album released this month was included on the set list with tracks including ‘Milk’ and ‘Dirt’. The track ‘A Big Day in the North’ was dedicated to Mani’s wife, Imelda who tragically passed away earlier this month. A fitting gesture that received applause from the audience.

The duo continue the UK tour with dates coming up in Cardiff, London and Southampton. For tickets and dates click the link below.
