BLONDE REDHEAD

BLONDE REDHEAD LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

Band on the Wall continue to treat music lovers to an eclectic mix of bands from all over the world and last night was no different. New York exports Blonde Redhead brought their dreamy, psych electronica to Swan Street along with a very large crowd, many of whom were excited to see this three piece in action.

The stage was smoky, and dimly lit at the band made their entrance to rapturous applause and cheers. With minimal bravado and subdued appreciative nods the band started up, with Amedo Pace taking up lead guitar to fill the intimate venue with multi-layered guitar weaved together with Kazu Makino’s beautiful, delicate, vocals, creating an alternative reality to the one we entered just minutes ago.

The room seemed to transform, and at many points in the evening I felt a complete sense of calm as the soothing melodies lulled the crowd into a dream-like stance, at times not even realising the songs had finished with a delayed applause and cheers.

Tonight was my first introduction to the band, and I it is difficult to compare this experience to any other gig I have attended. There is a nod to Sonic Youth in there somewhere, and certainly you can tell that a these guys were a huge influence on early Radiohead. It is common knowledge that Yorke is a huge fan of Blonde Redhead, with their work inspiring not only his first band, but now of course The Smile.

The band played material from their classic collection but also featured songs from their latest album ‘Sit Down for Dinner’, a collection of tracks teaming with romanticism and melancholic melodies that the band do so well.

Blonde Redhead are currently on tour and head to Belgium at the end of this week to continue their next leg, before heading back to the USA in October to tour a number of intimate venues on home turf. You can check out more information about the band below.
