Ten years after their eponymous debut album first brought the band to the nation’s attention, wafty-panted indie luminaries Blossoms are back with album number six, ‘Songs From The Wedding Cake’
From the opener ‘Joke about Divorce’ with its heavy debt to Hues Corporation, through tracks such as ‘The Kardashians ’, ‘Fall into You ’, ‘Uma Thurman ’, to closing track ‘The Deep End’, ‘Songs From The Wedding Cake is a record so bland that even after half a dozen listens, I’m still struggling to find anything, either positive or negative, to write about it.
Don’t get me wrong, this certainly isn’t a bad record. There are no cringy moments, no track that has you skipping through, and compared to some of the indie dross that’s landed recently, it perfectly demonstrates the chasm that exists between the top and bottom of the genre. It’s just that this is a record that is so inordinately dull.
But perhaps that is the point? Perhaps Tom and the lads have reached the enviable point where everyday life is just so good ‘it is what it is ’, and the majestic mundanity of modern life has taken over.
Time to look around you lads; plenty to get inspired by, plenty to shout about……lots of things prominent bands should be calling out and writing about!
So perhaps it is the album’s standout track ‘Guts’ that provides the answer with its line ‘oh to be so content with boredom…oh I’m so happy staying in’. Co-written by the band and Natalie Findlay with Jules Apollinaire, ‘Guts’ is a timeless love song worthy of any playlist, especially one documenting life in a northern town.
And perhaps that track sums up my frustrations with Blossoms more than anything else. To be such great talent, to be able to articulate in that way and yet to stay silent whilst the world burns around you- well, that’s an even worse look than those fucking flares.
