True to their name and bringing in a cool shade against the shimmering heat of summer, Bristol’s very own alternative outfit Brightshade presents their first EP “Believe”.
Made up of the three tracks, including the title under the same name, ‘Believe’, Brightshade fully establishes their sound. Within the polished production are their hard-hitting beats, poignant toplines and raw textures from the instrumentals, nailing the nu-metal sound while blending in their own touch of modern heavy rock.
‘Believe’ launches you straight into the heavy sentiments, in immersive growls and thrilling guitar riffs, we navigate the singer’s struggles with faith and “believing”. The synths seeping through to the outro is my favourite part, sounding like a video game prologue for when you walk out to claim glory, having defeated the final boss.
‘Antagonist’ is a bit brighter in terms of production, however the ache remains. The whirling chords and Dan (vocalist)’s scorching throat deliveries come together for this epic conclusion towards the end, literal goosebumps to the insane drumline.
‘Lost and Haunted’ is an anthemic tune, weaving in some studium-riot level crowd chants throughout. But the later half is definitely the highlight, the clashing between Dan’s roars, the ground-shaking bass and the heavy drums is nothing short of a nu-metal sacrament.
In the band’s own words, ‘We are all ‘up against it all’. While some regard Brightshade’s music to be psychological thrillers, or even melodramatic, I say that they are artists devoted to sharing the angst and revealing their lowest, no matter how ugly they might be.
