Hailing from Los Angeles, USA, Carter Ray embarks on the next stage of his glitch-pop journey with his first release of 2026, titled ‘COULD BE SOMETHING’.
To kick things off, a stand-alone synth travels from ear to ear, creating an almost video game-like soundscape that bounces around the brain, introducing the definitive Carter Ray sound from the offset.
Following ten seconds of warm up beat-bouncing, the wide vocal range of Carter Ray makes itself known, layering pure pop melodies over a sound that reminds you of pixelated screens and a well-spent childhood.
The whole setup is almost contradictory, combining retro-sounding glitches with modern pop vocals but make no mistake, it works wonders.
Each element grows into it’s clothes as the track advances, building a distorted, beat-breaking world in which the vocals rule.
A song that could be featured on a video game, reality TV show and one that could be featured at a nightclub is something I would rarely find myself stumbling across, though ‘COULD BE SOMETHING’ would feel at home in all three locations.
It’s fun and danceable but also real. Caught in a hard place between excitement and weariness, the song’s title gives an insight into the mixed emotion behind it’s content.
Bold, but I’m sure of it, that’s exactly what it is supposed to be.
