Grow were described as swaggering rock on the chalk board downstairs at the Golden Lion. with such a description I somehow had in my head some Motley Crue glamsters or a sneering Lydon style punk outfit. What I got was some highly intelligent 70s tinged rock with hints of Steely Dan verses meets Dodgy big chorus’.
Rapid changes of tempo, jazzy smooth one minute then they truly jump out at you with hook laden extremely catchy parts. Some excellent musicianship all around (hard to pick on a star here as they can all really play). Definitely a musical swagger about them then.
Also from Halifax are Casino Rockets. They are also very tight and deliver what appears to be a well rehearsed and note perfect performance. Its understated, highly controlled electronic based music with some almost classical style electric guitar and melancholic emotional vocals.
I liked these immediately and then found they grew even more on me. Their slow burner approach is a great change from hell for leather verse chorus bands you see frequently, allowing their deeper more sombre feel and sound to emanate from the stage and its great to listen to a band that is prepared to risk taking the audience on an extended journey, especially when it pays off.
