CHECK OUT COMEDIAN LIAM WITHNAIL’S BRAND NEW FANTASY ALBUM TRACKLIST

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FANTASY ALBUMS WHERE MUSIC FANS ARE PUT TO THE TEST TO DECIPHER THEIR ULTIMATE COLLECTION

The rules are simple(ish): they can’t repeat an album, and to just make it that little bit more interesting they have to use the same track number from another album. For example, Track 1 could be the opening track of the incredible Stone Roses’ debut ‘I Wanna Be Adored’. Track 2 could be Blur’s ‘Song 2′ – you get the idea? – basically their fave track 1, 2, 3 etc from 10 different albums.

Comedian/Podcaster Liam Withnail has curated this month’s Fantasy Album. Liam has over 10million TikTok/Instagram views and hosts popular podcast Enjoy an Album, alongside Christopher Macarthur-Boyd. He is also a regular guest on BBC Radio Scotland’s Breaking the News and has also been heard on The Good, The Bad and The Unexpected, seen on Socially Distant with Susan Calman and has written on Scot Squad. His 2023 Edinburgh Fringe show ‘Chronic Boom’ was a sell-out success and received widespread critical acclaim, racking up sixteen 4 and 5 star reviews including from The Independent and The Times, making it one of the best reviewed comedy shows of 2023!

1. The Arctic Monkeys – ‘Do I Wanna Know’

One of the coolest openers of my lifetime, the arctic monkeys are back and they’ve got pomeade in their hair. This album bridged old monkeys (songs about fights in nightclubs) to new monkeys ( songs about moon casinos and speedboats), This song sums it up perfectly.”

2. Jimi Hendrix- Machine Gun’ – Live at Filimore East

“Live version of a twelve minute  electric guitar Vietnam protest song. Complete with the guitar being made to sound like bomb drops, helicopters, and the titular machine gun. “

3. Godspeed You! Black Emperor- ‘Sleep’

I have this album cover tattooed on my arm, so it has to get a mention – another long one – this track is a 23 minute instrumental epic with an interview with a charming old man at the beginning. I love putting this song on in noise cancelling headphones as a plane begins to take off, timing the ascent with the crescendo of the track.”
4. Brian Eno- ‘The Big Ship’

Brian Eno doing in 3 minutes what took Godspeed 23. The swell of the guitars gets me every single time. With thanks to Adam Curtis for alerting me to this via his documentaries when I was a teenager. This concludes the instrumental portion of the album.”

5. The Smiths- ‘That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore’

A comedian and a lifelong Smiths fan, I challenge anyone not to bellow “I’ve seen this happen in other peoples lives” and feel 15 again. “

6. Nico -‘Chelsea Girls’

“Side 2 of the album is our slow descent toward melancholy. Nico’s voice always astounds me, and she gets to showcase it here for 7 whole minutes – the flute solo elevates this to a must include.”

7. Joy Division -‘Shadowplay’

The iconic baseline, followed by the guitar riff – lives rent free in my head. Lets face it, this album is erratic already so might as well lean in to that.”

8. Dusty Springfield-‘The Windmiills of Your Mind’

An underrated dusty classic, sultry, sophisticated. They really don’t make them like this anymore. This really is warming us up for the next track though.

9. Nina Simone- ‘Sinnerman’

It’s going to be a long album okay? Ten minutes of Nina, arguably at her best. The piano is a joy throughout, it takes a couple minutes until the iconic “Power!”, and from then on its a pure ride. “

10. Radiohead-‘Videotape’

In Rainbows was so important to my own musical journey, the closing track closes my own selection too. To wind us down after Nina, with the slow fade out of electric drums over simple piano. Time to lie down and think about everything we’ve just been through.”

An evocative Fantasy Album by Liam Withnail, with a truly haunting final track by Radiohead.
