Nottingham’s post-punters Cucamaras played at Halifax’s renowned and by far the coolest small gig venue in Yorkshire The Grayston Unity last night. The venue is very fucking cool, without being lame or trying too hard, its just cool, with some very experimental artwork on the wall, I especially liked the Nick Cave/Elvis mash up in the cosy seating area at the back.
The four piece are carving a decent following in what is arguably a growing genre, becoming more and more competitive, but this band are holding their own and growing a decent fan-base. It is a Wednesday night, it’s raining and the venue is comfortable busy, that is impressive.
Tonight sees the start of a UK tour and unfortunately their is no Manchester date so I have popped on the train to my hometown of Halifax, a place that I am ‘popping to’ more and more recently due to the Piece Hall becoming known for hosting some of the biggest names in the world (this year is no different – check out the line-up).
The band came out to a large cheer and started into a series of fast paced punk numbers, with a pleasurable sound, think Fontaines DC but a little more upbeat. The rhythm guitar was catchy, the drums infectious ands the songs which feature on their EP ‘Buck Rodgers Time’. (Check out their band camp below) are certainly worth a listen for anyone who is a fan of Joy Division and the aforementioned Fontaines.
The band recently support RGM faves IST IST, and it is easy to see why they were part of their tour. Vocalist Olly Bowley had his own agenda, with jerky dance moves and an intense glare that is not dissimilar at times to IST IST’s very own Adam Houghton. Make your own mind up and catch them next week in Liverpool!
