Taken from their fourth studio album, Southampton-based outfit Dan O’Farrell and The Difference Engine released ‘Hang Me On The Wall’ as one of the singles, and honestly, I can see why.
Introduced by a simultaneously whimsical / groovy instrumentation, almost like the theme song of a modern day jester, Dan O’Farrell & The Difference Engine create an entertaining soundscape from second zero and helps to keep the tone comical before returning to the dark side with their execution inspired lyricism.
With lead vocals split between Dan O’Farrell and double-bassist Rick Foot, the contrast in pitch makes for an interesting sound throughout, back-and-fourthing crazy counts of execution and harmonizing in important areas to produce a carnival-folk type sound that i’ve never really heard before.
Everything about ‘Hang Me On The Wall’ just works for me. It’s dark, spooky and scarily fun. The humour laced throughout the track prevents it from being too creepy, balancing groovy instrumentation with some, quite frankly, ridiculous lyrics.
Produced by Andy Lewis, the double-bass plays it’s role perfectly within the track. Not out-performing the other elements but finding the perfect groove for such a sinister, yet comical song.
Bold, bizarre and honestly, really really good. Dan O’Farrell & The Difference Engine show exactly how to combine the darker elements of songwriting with humour, making it palatable for the average listener and still keeping it weird enough for the niche audiences.
With plenty of shows coming up across the south of England, I’d be sure to see how this whacky sound translates into a live performance!
