Dea Matrona – ‘Hate That I Care’ LP Review

Belfast alt-rock duo, Dea Matrona, return with ‘Hate That I Care’, the follow-up to the much lauded debut ‘For Your Sins’

It would have been easy for Dea Matrona to have gone large in every way with this record, but rather than getting in a big guns producer, Mollie McGinn and Orlaith Forsythe took control of every step of this record’s journey, resulting in a record that is clearly intensely personal, both in terms of the record’s subject matter and musical direction.

The duo have built on the Alt blues rock grounding in the debut with a sharper, more honed sound to accompany the ever-sharper lyrics.

Singles ‘My Own Party’,’John Doe’ and most recent ‘Hate That I Care’ all lead the way in terms of what to expect… radio-friendly alt rock of the type we’ve not heard for a long, long time.

The rest of the record follows type. ‘Summer Rain’, ‘Wait’, ‘Magic Spell’ all add to the overall feel that this record, laced with the sublime vocal coaction of Mollie and Orlaith, really is something out of the ordinary. It may not be groundbreaking for sure, but it is a very, very, very accessible alt-rock record yet it manages to be that without being bland, cringy or, as is all too often the case with accessible alt-rock, just shit.

The band have quite an extensive touring schedule for this summer and autumn, hitting the road with Wolf Alice and Sting, and I would imagine the band will be well received by the fans at those gigs. With two such great albums under their belt at such an early age, and such potential mass appeal, it’s not implausible that Dea Matrona could be one of the biggest bands on the planet in the not too distant future.
