A little journey out of Manchester this evening to the beautiful surroundings of Trentham Gardens, which this weekend will play host to some of the biggest names in the music industry. Even a torrential downpour couldn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd who had gathered to see night one of this annual event.
I arrived in time for legendary Lightning Seeds who had attracted quite a crowd which continued to grow throughout their set. The band played fan favourites with frontman Ian Broudie in fine voice belting out ‘Marvellous’, Change’ and ‘Lucky You’. The band always have the ability to make you feel good, with their catchy melodies and guitar solos, you can guarantee you’ll feel a little better about the world after a Lighting Seeds sing-a-long.
Continuing the feel good theme were Scottish rockers Deacon Blue who always put on a memorable show. Ricky Ross has the most charismatic stage presence, swaggering about, with wife Lorraine twirling and tambourining about the whole band always seem to be having fun, and it’s infectious.
The band kicked off with a number of fan favourites, including ‘Fergus Sings the Blues’ which got a big cheer from the crowd. Ross entertained the audience with his dry wit between songs, apologising for the band being a little quiet over the last month, but they are all keen olympians, then continued to apologise for bringing the Scottish weather with them.
As the rain picked up again, the band continued with the hits, with the weather adding some pathetic fallacy in this enchanted surrounding with the rain and the moody lighting. We could well have been watching this in the grounds of a Highland castle.
The evening ended with none other than ‘Dignity’, their most famous record, and it never fails to impress and of course another sing-a-long was on the go with this enthusiastic audience, all of whom had not let the rain dampen this magical evening of music.
I would like to thank Trentham Live for being such wonderful hosts, and we are looking forward to next year’s event already! Certainly one of the more picturesque locations for a Thursday evening of entertainment!
