Coming fresh from Aberdeen, five mates came together in the spirit of rock. The love for rock of all decades is all laid out in their band name, Decade. While known for their live presence, the band stands out by bringing in elements from all walks of rock into their music, and inventing one of their own.
Talisker Storm is among one of those inventions. In wizzling static sounds and a tendering extended guitar solo intro, Brandon (Lead vocals)’s voice navigates through the guitar passages before the drums kicks in, and the isolated build-up absolutely pays off for the drop.
With vocals riding on the revolving instrumentals in the second verse, the mix being raw, almost amateur-sounding adds another layer of grunge to the delivery, more specifically, it’s like listening to a story unfold in the its realest form.
Yet the instrumental storm strikes again, this time with Fin’s (Lead guitar) guitar bursting into absolute berserk in the bridge before we come back into Brandon‘s grounded chorus, his voice carrying onto the outro.
The outro with the stuttering drums and guitar riffs is my favourite part, the slight western-influenced blues with the steel guitars, upright bass letting the listener drift away into the wild with the storm…
Talisker Storm is undoubtedly a statement piece for Decade, playing in the background as they march confidently into the indie-rock scene, establishing themselves as the “new Scottish force” of their era.
