Dundee’s Nick Shane is back, having released his last studio album “Calé Sunrise” in 2025, he’s bursting back onto the scene with his newest single “Don’t Bite Back Baby (It’s Alright)”.
If you don’t know Nick, his genre is described as “UK mod-punk-indie” on his website – and for this single he’s collaborated with fellow scot-musicians Kimberley Archibald, Rue Cooper, Jodie Rae, Ed Muirhead and Billy Caldwell – with Nick holding them to high regard, calling them “some of Scotland’s finest session musicians”.
Before we get onto the music, I have to say the artwork really caught my eye, there’s a lot going on, reminded me a bit of an Instagram grid but with an edge, just showing the chaos and fun of live shows – my interpretation at least anyway!
Onto the track itself then and it’s a not a bad length, sitting at just over four minutes – it has a glorious instant intro using keys which were an instant hook for me, these carry on consistently throughout the track – the vocals aren’t far behind and they rip through the keys, guitar and drumbeat (all of which are very catchy) and it sits perfectly front and centre – it’s been beautifully mastered.
There is also some saxophone weaved into an instrumental break, which I LOVED – it really broke the song up and added an unexpected but welcome jazz element into the mix – really rated that.
The lyrics are quite deep in places but given that the instrumental is quite upbeat and even fun, they’re quite hidden away within the track, but that’s part of it’s charm.
This is a great track, it’s a really easy listen, hooks you in quickly and teases with lots of different instruments and elements, on first listen, it keeps you guessing and just has instant likeability – a very well written and produced track – I rate it.
