It was a whirlwind of post-punk, jazz infused mayhem as Geordie Green took to the stage at Manchester’s New Century Hall last night. The show had sold out weeks ago as the former Black Midi and part of the emerging wave of British rock, know as the Windmill Scene.
The twenty five year old was accompanied by a hugely talented band, a variety of instruments to accompany Greep who acknowledged all of the talented musicians as he entered the stage to a huge cheer from the crowd.
London born Greep seems to have flourished since going solo, his work hard to categorise as it holds so many influences but remains quite honestly one of the most unique talents I have seen in a long time. I was meant to be taking photographs, but at times found myself slack jawed at the sheer talent in front of me. The presence and composure of a performer way beyond his years.
Greep released his first solo album last August ‘The New Sound’ which it truly is. The crowd were buzzing, you could feel the excitement leaching out of their pores as they pushed on the barrier, one fan launching a paper aeroplane at Greep which he amusingly ate, before spitting it out and carrying on mid song.
I must mention the chemistry amongst the band members, it was seamless, as times just jamming for the pure pleasure if it, not knowing what was coming next, the spontaneity quite frankly a refreshing change from the tireless indie landfill that seems to clog up many venues these days, this was real solid raw live fucking magic and I honestly felt privileged to witness it.
I am truly excited to see where this young man goes as it is clear he is on an upwards trajectory to big big things. Greep returns to Manchester later this year and I can guarantee tickets will fly out.
