Gunge are an indie rock trio formed in 2024. The band hail from Oldham formed by former solo artist Zeny Bux, Harry Beckett and Bradley “Gonzo” Strong. Just last week saw them release their debut single, ‘Make A Connection’ and it made for a good first effort from these guys.
The opening consistent guitar riff, steady drum rhythms and clean vocal production immediately reminded me of the debut Cast era with All Change (1995) really bleeding through as I listened. These elements blended and flowed together smoothly. The vocal style has hopeful undertones that are reflective of wanting to make a change and finding the “magic door” to find the progression they crave. This is matched well by the instrumentals in the verses to portray that progression.
The choruses are anthemic and inspire the motivation to deal with the “bumpy rides” in life and making connections with those that matter and are there for the journey. With catchy riffs and memorable melodies, the choruses definitely show the potential these band have for future releases, and this is one I see getting the crowd going live.
The bridge features a sparkling distorted guitar solo that dances across the foundations of the track before a stripped back chorus echoes out to build that final bit of excitement ahead of the pinnacle ending chorus. The vocal harmonies pair together beautifully at the end but one thing I would’ve liked to have seen was another showcase of those guitar solo skills to bring the song to a decisive close.
Overall, a very good effort and I’m excited to see what Gunge have in store next.
