This weekend Gustaffson retuned to play a hometown show at one of the most favoured of venues in town, Night & Day Cafe. The band have recently released their stunning debut album ‘Black and White Movie’ and tonight was a perfect opportunity to hear the album played out live in this beautifully intimate venue.
Support this evening came from spoken word artist Jack Horner ‘AKA’ Leon The Pig Farmer. Leon was the ideal opener to warm up the ever increasing audience, with his acidic, humorous vitriol aimed at just about everything that is wrong with the world. It is an excellent form of therapy, after a Pig Farmer set as you feel like he’s somewhat cleansed your soul of all the negativity in the world, a little bit like writing down everything that pisses you off and burning it.
It was not all angry, Leon also addressed the more humorous side of life, such as tram rides across town and toilet wall graffiti. It is a rare talent to flip from verbally taking down the government, to drawing out the sentimental side with a beautiful and much deserved tribute to his mother, then making people belly laugh with musings on all things Mancunian. A half an hour of pure chaos which ended in what just might be the first poet stage dive (of sorts) six burly men carried the farmer across the dance floor whilst he continued to recite his prose. You can always expect this lad to do something outside the box…
The headliners made their way onto the stage to huge cheers and with the crowd now filling out nicely it was time for Gustaffson to make their mark. The band have gone from strength to strength and with Andrew Gower making his way to centre stage, a very enigmatic frontman, pure raw emotion emitting from every pore as he played his way through their latest material.
The band are made up of exceptionally talented musicians, who have the most wonderful stage presence, with Gower telling his stories through music, lyrically intelligent songs that are a refreshing change from some of the utter drivel I have been subjected to this year. These guys know music, and they expect, and receive a reaction from the audience who hang onto every single word. Sophisticated is a word that would describe this evening of music, without being the slightest bit pretentious. Check out their new album for something a little bit different. It is a work of storytelling art.
