HEAVY LUNGS

HEAVY LUNGS- ARTS CLUB, LIVERPOOL- WHAT WENT DOWN?

The Loft at Arts Club, Liverpool, smells like leather as Centerfold and Joe and the Shitboys start the night’s proceedings. Shoes stick to the aged wooden floorboards after weeks of drinks have been spilt. The audience begins trickling through the venue’s double doors, after being met by the world’s jolliest security guard.

Crowd members bang on the metal barrier as Heavy Lungs take to the stage. Frontman, Danny Nedelko, paces back and forth, dressed in black, like an edgier, Bristolian Johnny Cash, before the band erupts into their first tune, Cushion The Blow, off their latest release, Caviar.

The crowd gets more eager as more songs are blasted out by the band, covering material from their two major releases, All Gas No Brakes and Caviar, with various singles/tracks off past EPs dotted in between. We see the band reciprocating this eager energy with bass player James Minchall, throwing his body all over the right side of the stage. The band fires through more tunes, as the notes bounce off the loft’s exposed brick. The loud, raucous noise is broken up by witty humour from drummer George Garratt and Nedelko, telling the crowd, “their latest record makes for a good coaster”.

The band continues to incite disorder by splitting the audience in two, before Nedelko jumps into the crowd, and is carried like a small wardrobe by the audience, before jumping back on stage and blistering through their hit and final song, (A Bit of a) Birthday. The song ended with a 2-minute dancing break by Nedelko, before promptly walking off, blowing kisses to the audience, leaving guitarist Oli Southgate and James Minchall basking in the gig’s final notes on stage.
