Self-described ‘Welsh Awen Rock band’ – ‘Awen’ being a Welsh and Cornish word meaning inspiration or ‘flowing spirit’ – Holy Coves have dropped their third and final single, ‘Travelling’, from their upcoming album ‘Hiraeth’ (another Welsh word meaning a bittersweet yearning for home, or homesickness).
The track itself is built around a clean-toned acoustic guitar riff, with intertwining layers of reverbed, echoey slide guitar melodies.
Singer-songwriter Scott Marsden’s lyrics centre around the heavy burdens experienced in life, and guiding yourself or a loved one through them.
In a previous interview, Marsden dives into how addiction, love, loss, and family shape his lyrics, which is definitely reflected here, and I’m sure will be a common theme throughout the upcoming album.
The firm bass and energetic, but never overpowering, drums really ground the song, giving it a solid beat that keeps the flowy guitars in place. Without them, the track would feel far too floaty.
Another strong release from Holy Coves in the lead-up to their fourth album. You can catch them performing it live too, as they’re covering practically every UK city on their album in-store tour.
