At just 13 years old,Huddersfield singer-songwriter Iris Danbury makes an impressive debut with the single “I Don’t Care”. It is a true feel-good pop anthem that encourages young people to embrace what makes them different instead of worrying about what everyone else thinks.
From the first note, it is upbeat, playful and incredibly catchy. Later on, a simple but totally effective chorus makes it all even better:
“I don’t care what people think, I don’t care what people say“. As we all should!
Lyrically, “I Don’t Care” speaks to young people growing up in a world full of comparisons and expectations. Rather than trying to fit in, Iris celebrates being yourself, whether that’s dyeing your hair pink, listening to music nobody expects you to like or simply refusing to play by everyone else’s rules. While Iris may have written this song for her generation, I found it just as relatable being older. Indeed, even as we grow older, it’s difficult to completely let go of comparisons and expectations so the track stands as a nice reminder for literally everyone.
The production matches that youthful spirit perfectly. Bright pop melodies, infectious hooks and an uplifting rhythm
For a debut single, Iris also sounds incredibly confident and there is a natural charm in her voice. If I had one tiny criticism, it’s that I’d love to hear Iris push herself vocally even more on future releases. Nonetheless, she is only at the beginning of her career and has plenty of time to find her voice.
If this is only the beginning for Iris Danbury, she could very well be a young pop star in the making.
