Jake Bugg Warrington Parr Hall

Jake Bugg opened his 2024 ‘Your Town Tour’ in spectacular style last on Tuesday night with a sold-out show at Warrington’s legendary Parr Hall.

The tour sees Jake visiting fifteen of the countries’ smaller towns and venues in a bid to bring a higher profile live show to some of the venues that have seen a drop off in bigger touring artists visiting.

Support for the night is from Jake himself, performing a short acoustic set before his main show. Whilst ordinarily I’d have been delighted by this, on this occasion I had intended to drop into another Warrington venue to catch local legends Mademaker open for Black Orchid Empire but sadly that wasn’t meant to be. Still, two Jake Bugg sets in an evening is hardly a sufferance.

The first nine-song set demonstrates the very delicate side of Jake’s writing along with his sheer talent as both a singer and guitarist. ‘Slide’ was particularly haunting, ’Simple As This’ is the night’s first anthemic sing-along. ‘Hold Tight’ finishes the first set and as Jake walks off the applause was quite something to behold.

In no time at all he was back on stage, bass player and drummer in tow and it’s straight into ‘Trouble Town’ to the rapturous delight of the Warrington crowd. The crowd can barely contain themselves as Jake leads his band straight into ‘Messed up Kids’ and ‘Kingpin’. It’s a pretty raucous affair in contrast to the earlier part of the evening and the crowd revels in seeing both sides of Jake.

There’s plenty of chatting with the crowd, particularly when introducing some of the newer material. One new song in particular stands out… ’Waiting for the World’ has a great Rubber Soul vibe to it, particularly the instant classic guitar riff, it’s sure to be a favourite in future tours.

‘Seen It All’ gets the crowd joining in again but it’s nothing compared to the crowd’s rendition of ‘Broken’, at one point even Jake seems quite taken aback by the crowd. ‘Two Fingers’ brings the house down, the foot-stamping to ‘Lightning Bolt’ was probably felt miles away.

‘All I need’ wrapped up the night and as Jake says his thanks and goodbyes to Warrington, he could only have been thinking just how good the next couple of weeks are going to be.
