JORDAN HIGO - HEAVY

Jordan Higo – ‘Heavy’ – Single Review

A voice that is made for soul and R&B, Yorkshire-born indie artist Jordan Higo releases the first single from his debut mixtape, HEAVY. A gritty, metallic alt-R&B tune that introduces us to a darker side of the artist.

Sonically, Jordan’s signature airy vocals remain intact. However, unlike his past works like Blue Moon and DAWN where a pleasant baseline backs up the vocals, HEAVY is mildly discomforting. With the distorted guitars, morphed notes and muddled drums, the track unironically sounds ‘heavy’.

The grimy beats did a wonderful job of portraying the dread, while Jordan’s voice actually adapted extremely well to. The way his vocals sink into the beats and sway alongside without getting buried in the multi-textured instrumental is what makes HEAVY so mesmerising.

Jordan mentioned the song being written from recognising a loop he couldn’t get out of, which is visualised in the music video. We see Jordan singing, back against the streets of London as he travels around the city in a loop, lit up by the glimmering lights of neon signs and traffic lights.

It is as if the artist gave us a look into this excruciating spiral of impulse, regret and self-loathe of his, and how he chose to express this feeling with music.

My only complaint would properly be the length of the song. Heavy is just a little bit over two minutes and the song fleets as we were just getting into the meat of it. However, we did catch a glimpse of the textural, intrinsic sound Jordan has curated, and I can’t wait to see how much he has in store for us.
