Kim Deal has had an illustrious career playing with some of the most highly rated bands in the world Tonight Deal and her band were playing at Manchester’s New Century Hall. The venue has attracted some outstanding talent since it’s reopening and huge refurb. The venue was the ideal place for Kim Deal to perform tonight, as despite its large capacity it still has that magically intimate feel.
The venue started to fill up and by the time Deal and her band arrived on stage at 9pm, it was jam packed. A warm welcome was emitted from the crowd as Deal began the performance with ‘Nobody Loves You More’, the titular track of her debut solo album. The first set was to be the album played in full, a treat for this crowd as it provided an opportunity to see Deal take centre stage and the well-deserved limelight.
Deal seemed to be humbled by the outpouring of love from this Manchester audience. The newer work was well received with fans already singing along to the gnarly pop influenced melodies which are accompanied perfectly by Deal’s vocals. The album has been incredibly well received by critics. Deal has a very down-to-earth appeal, and looks genuinely at home on stage, which emits a warmth as it is always a joy to see musicians loving what they do.
The second set was primarily Breeders tracks, and despite this new solo venture, Deal has said this does not mean the end for the The Breeders. The first song by The Breeders was ‘Safari’ followed by ‘Off You’ and ‘No Aloha’. It was clear that some fans had come in the hope that these tracks would be played, and they were not disappointed. The evening ended after a very generous set and a two-track encore with Deal closing with ‘Cannonball’.
For any fans of Kim Deal’s former bands, I highly recommend you check out ‘Nobody Loves You More’ which offers a slightly different direction musically but still authentically Kim Deal.
