Australian alt-rockers, Kitty of the Valley, have released their latest single ‘Krautrock’ that does what is says on the tin, and some!
From Sydney/Eora, the bands sound-defining song follows themes around growing into a woman and the uncertainty that it can bring.
The single opens with fragmented thudding drums, maybe feeling a bit of disconnected intro but definitely adding a quirky suspense. Bursting into groove-riddled bass lines from Dylan Thompson and quick paced drum rhythms from Josh Blythe, the track is pulled a super fun, dance-punk territory that I’m always drawn towards.
Lead vocals from Allegra Pezsullo, gradually float in, with her lyrics exploring the uncertainty of growing into a woman, alongside twanging, almost citar-like melodies from lead guitarist, Howard Goodsall- whilst being very danceable, the track feels both vast and reflective.
Part-way through the track, all of the layers strip away leaving quietened drums and nearly whispering vocals before injecting the track with waves of energy. This final time Pezsullo’s vocals break into this amazing alt-rock edge with shrieks alongside a smooth, harmonies.
As the song reaches a close, the drums build in harshness and both the vocals and the guitars jam out twining, psychedelic melodies.
What they’ve done so well with this single is emulate that Krautrock feeling of get sucked into a spiral- I enjoyed it so much I slightly wish for a bit more of that hypnotic effect, perhaps with more weirder twangs and sounds residing throughout. Maybe I just wanted it to go on for longer as Krautrock songs often do.
Absolutely loved this track and will be following how Kitty of the Valley unfurl in the future!
