The new track from Sheffield 5-piece Ladybower clearly wears its influences on their Steel city sleeves proudly, from the obvious presence of local Britpop heroes Pulp to the transatlantic, avant-garde sensibilities of LCD Soundsystem and Talking Heads.
I struggled to find anything about the song that I didn’t like, and the new single reflects a development as songwriters from their debut EP ‘Believe it / Roving Eye’, with the former being a much more guitar-driven track in comparison with a more diverse range of sounds here.
Kicking things off with a tantalising drum-beat, the track escalates with real urgency and enticement. With lyrics discussing being lied to and ripped off by people who promise the world at their feet, “For only £8.50 a month, I will guide you through”, it’s a song which at first, dangers on alienating anybody outside the music industry.
However, in the contemporary climate of political uncertainty and dishonesty, listen closer and the song much more context that will hopefully thrive in a live venue.
