LLOYD COLE PLAYS MANCHESTER – READ ALL ABOUT IT HERE!

Lloyd Cole played Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall this evening and it was certainly a gig worth braving the storms for. With only a few empty seats, the venue was packed with fans lucky enough to grab tickets to this extra special show which saw Cole play two sets.

The veteran crooner has been treading the boards of multiple venues worldwide since 1984 and tonight saw Cole continue to evolve, with songs played from his most recent release ‘On Pain’. Of. course best known for his work with his band The Commotions, Cole’s sets this evening were stripped back, surrounded by a smaller band in what was a very civilised seated affair.

The first set was Americana inspired, gentle country, but with elements of Bil Callahan mixed with Billy Bragg, but ultimately Cole has his own vibe and that was melancholic and played with an intensity. Cole cut a causal figure this evening, dressed in an all white ensemble, appearing a little reserved at first, and making wry comments but not overly chatty with the crowd.

Both sets features songs by Cole and the Commotions, and also solo material. The first set ended fan favourite ‘Rattlesnakes’ and ‘Are You Ready to be Heartbroken’ which rounded off the first half as it started, easy listening personified. The second half was a little livelier, and included two of my favourite Commotions tracks, the very catchy ‘Jennifer She Said’ and ‘Brand New Friend’. The former was part of the two track encore which also included ‘Mainstream’.

Cole’s tour continues across the UK and it is certainly one to catch if your want two hours of beautiful, solid songwriting. The venue was also an added bonus with the acoustics being outstanding as always. You can check out below where Cole is playing next but it is certainly one to add to your list of ‘must see acts’!
