These lads need no introduction for regular RGM readers. Our home-grown Sheffield boys are back with another single, which deems the first release from their forthcoming EP The Limit.
For the five-piece that is Matilda Shakes who has been dominating the northern scene for the past year, this EP will mark a pivotal point in their musical career. For this EP also comes a tour, including their hometown as they will be joined by a fellow Steel city band, Cargos.
“Transmission” bears the signature Matilda Shakes sound, with the relentless guitars we are brought into an anthematic start, and it only gets wilder from there. The build-up in particular, is executed flawlessly. The way the hype-inducing strums resolve in a refreshing chorus with almost funk-pop falsettos from Hallam is just immaculate.
I am obsessed with the witty yet genius lyricism. You can’t help but join in the fun, my favourites are “Plug me in, I’m rock ’n’ roll!” and “We’re the noise, the new religion”, which are lines that screams character especially in how they own the attitude with their performance.
The point of “Transmission” is about spreading energy and fun, and I think they nailed it. While the climax of the track explodes into a satisfying and well-deserved instrumental break before the final chorus, the unpredictability is what keeps the track exciting until the end with the extended outro.
“Transmission” is the perfect opener in teasing their incoming EP, and I am definitely left wanting more from the Sheffield stars.
