Ladies and Gentlemen, the time is upon us. One of the best times to be in as a country. It’s World Cup summer season! But the weather hasn’t quite got that memo yet unfortunately, we’re still working on that one. But expect rammed pubs, knock off football shirts and of course, in a last-ditch effort to spur the players on; a variety of World Cup inspired tracks. Some are diabolical, some are actually catchy and some are just super funny and keep the atmosphere light. I’ll be honest, I’m better versed in the Scottish side of World Cup songs so time to switch back to English ones as once again, all the people believe this might be the year they finally do it. But let’s not delve too deep into that discussion and dive deep into the ultimate Yorkshire collab between Doncaster viral star MC Devvo and Sheffield’s regular on 8 out of 10 Cats Rob Madin AKA Brett Domino.
This love letter track emerged from a series of voice note, message and idea exchanges. Combining terrace chants, infectious hooks and plenty of football nostalgia with an intro of a starting XI of players from across generations; from Sheringham to Bellingham. Tongue-in-cheek lyrics characterise the verses in a quick-witted rap manner that feels like essential early 2000s listening. The choruses display the classic elements that create a quintessential football song reminiscent of standard football chants that are often accompanied by banging drums in the ultra mixers. This is a track I could see being recited by fans in fan zones or pubs ahead of kick off as pints go flying and the fans mosh together in the (hopefully!) sunshine.
This is a fun hopeful effort of a track that encapsulates the pub garden culture, flag waving massif and wonderful relationship between football and music. And to quote the song directly, hopefully this will inspire the team to score more goals than any of the other tunes.
