One eagerly anticipated autobiography that will no doubt be on many a music lovers Christmas list has just been released by none other than Manchester’s very own drummer extraordinaire Mike Joyce.
Thursday night was the Manchester leg of his UK wide promotional tour which has seen Joyce be interviewed by a number of famous names, all Smiths fans. Manchester were very lucky indeed as tonight’s host was another local lad, Salford born actor Christopher Eccleston.
Eccleston was the perfect host, and the pair bounced off each other, making the generous two hour insight into Joyce’s impressive career flow beautifully. The questions were well prepared and allowed Joyce to lament on certain areas of his life, many amusing displaying a quick wit and charming demeanour that the audience lapped up. There were also many emotional moments in which Joyce reflected on his close friendship with the late Andy Rourke. Tales were told about life on tour with Marr and of course Morrissey.
The book itself is a deep insight into the journey of The Smiths and Joyce’s experience of being a part of what Eccleston described as the one of the two best bands to come out of the UK in musical history (the other of course being The Beatles).
The book has been receiving rave reviews and having just ordered my copy I am very much looking forward to getting stuck in. The book launch itself also saw Joyce do a signing and the queue at the end was snaking out the door at Stoller Hall, a testament to the magical evening of stories so perfectly told, leaving fans wanting to know more.
The book can be bought here at New Modern Books.
