Modern Horrors Interview – RGM Introducing

Hiya Modern Horrors, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?

Hey, I grew up and lived in Scarborough most of my life, but now live down the road in Whitby, I got into music being round my kind of older brothers who were obsessed with skate culture and pop punk bands in the 00’s

What’s the live music scene like in (Scarborough/ Whitby) right now?

Scarborough has a big music scene with the success of the open-air theatre, but this is mainly for pleasing tourist based and older demographics, we have had bands like The Smashing Pumpkins & Korn play which is insane though.

However, there isn’t much of a scene for underground bands which is a shame, I find myself going to Leeds/ Newcastle or Manchester for that

Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

Pleasure Centre are a great band, and my album wouldn’t exist without the help of Charlie & Fredi who helped produced and record drums on it.

Also, my mate Eddie’s band SHINDIG is super wild and my cousin Brad’s band MUCK.

Do you think it’s easy to become a victim of our surroundings sometimes?

Oh yeah, it’s easy to fester in those circumstances if its bad, and take for granted if its good

I think that’s what you mean?

What are your ambitions for the band?

I just hope it gets some sort of appreciation; I got sick of sort of waiting to be in the right situation to record an album and just did it myself at home with the help of Beckview studios. It was always a life goal of mine, so just to see it out in the world is truly nice enough

Whats your favourite social media platform to use and why?

I don’t really like any social media platforms hahah, I guess Instagram is fun I set my stuff to private and sort of use it like a personal scrapbook so it’s nice to look back on stuff

We believe it’s essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?

I do agree with that as that’s the best way to engage with an audience now, it’s something that I’m going to be working on. The main place to find us will be Instagram and that way we can sort of stylise it all and be playful and creative with the art and visuals

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

I find it wild that the band and identity being “the product” more relevant more than ever which is interesting. Examples are like making sure there is a certain number of Instagram followers/ tiktok followers before even getting behind an artist/band and packaging it that way. But that’s just in a way that its always worked because at the end of the day it is a business

Whats your thoughts on AI generated music?

I feel if you hide behind it and say you create something while completely using AI then that’s bad  and shows no artistic integrity, but I can’t lie those songs people have made for jokes with it and spoofs are really funny.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Less really is more. When I was recording everything in my room and constantly changing amp settings and doing multiple tracks because I couldn’t decide how it should be.

I made a song that was like just maybe 15 tracks and when it was mastered it sounded insane so that was very beneficial for making stuff in the future

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

I am obsessed with The Story so Far and No Pressure at the moment, I think I have been playing them solidly since last year, as well as bands like SPEED, Drug Church and One Step Closer.

What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?

I’ve only recently started doing it, but we covered (I think) an IDLES song and this child legit started screaming and crying and ran away.

Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?

Sadly I do not, sorry to disappoint

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

I do! The full album is out on the October 31st. The album is called ‘Reflections’

This has been being made for I think the best part of 3/ 4 years in between working jobs and recording and scrapping tracks. After I finally took the leap to find a studio It feels amazing that it will finally be coming out.

What was the recording process like?

Amazing and horrible at the same time. When you map out new songs and you sit back or even show someone and you see their eyes light up and it makes you feel vindicated that you’re on to something is honestly incredible.

But constantly re-doing parts or messing it up when recording or having to do take after take of vocals is just awful and your ears get fatigued and you end up hating the things you’ve made.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Not really, I just hope to take what I’ve learned and do it more collaboratively with other members in the future

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

I hope you enjoyed listening to the single Black Cat, we are also still looking for members for the band so please drop us a message on Instagram! More songs are coming out soon and the album ‘Reflections’ is out on October 31st on all platforms
