News : The Beatles – White Album turns 50 years old today, here is how to celebrate the milestone!

This month marks half a century since The Beatles released their iconic album, ‘The White Album’, on 23rd November 1968. To celebrate, global music streaming service Deezer has revealed the nation’s favourite songs by the famous quartet, according to its UK user data.

The 1969 George Harrison penned track, ‘Here Comes the Sun’ has been revealed as the nation’s favourite, clocking up more streams in 2018 than any other from the band’s extensive catalogue. The Lennon and McCartney hits ‘Twist and Shout’ and ‘Let It Be’ made up the remaining top three positions for their most streamed hits this year.

Last Friday, a special anniversary edition of The White Album with new mixes by producer Giles Martin was released, further prompted  a 119% surge in streams of The Beatles‘ music.*

Interestingly, many of the band’s 2018 fans weren’t even born until decades after the album’s original release date. More people under 25 stream the band’s records than those over 55 in 2018 – the age group who would have been around during their hey-day. One in six (17%) of those streaming Beatles records in 2018 were aged 18-25, while 13% of those were aged 55 and above.

Surprisingly given the band’s heritage, the Liverpool quartet’s current biggest fans appear to be in London, Glasgow and Birmingham, while Liverpool came in fourth position for the UK cities streaming the most Beatles music.

Dom Wallace, Global Pop Editor at Deezer said: “It’s fantastic to see that The Beatles are still continuing to attract new fans, more than half a century after they first took the world by storm. At Deezer, we’re always encouraging our users to discover new music, whether that’s unearthing a new track that was released a matter of hours ago, or finding something special from decades ago. ‘The White Album’ is an iconic part of British music history, and we want to honour that with a playlist that will allow both new and long standing fans of The Beatles to enjoy all of their biggest hits, and discover new favourites along the way.”

To celebrate the anniversary, Deezer has released a 100% Beatles playlist, so that music fans of all ages can relive all of the band’s biggest tracks.
