After releasing her first song in almost four years back in March, Nicole Dash Jones is once again making her presence felt in the US music scene with ‘Minty’.
Using her new home of Los Angeles as inspiration to advance her career, ‘Minty’ draws influence from the likes of Beach House and Cigarettes After Sex, which becomes abundantly clear from the opening few notes of her most recent release.
Very Lo-Fi and relaxed, Nicole’s vocals come in alongside a musical shift towards a bass-heavy background, which I must say is mixed excellently and keeps the vibes chill whilst having a focal point for the groove.
As ‘Minty’ starts to take it’s shape, the quirkiness of Nicole’s songwriting starts to appear alongside it, not only showing her talent for vocals, but lyricism too; with a standout lyric being “My blood is running warm but my heart is still freezing”.
Showing exactly why she has amassed over 40k monthly listeners on Spotify, Nicole Dash Jones creates a sonically calming but simultaneously emotional atmosphere with ‘Minty’, confusing you with bullets disguised as lyrics but maintaining a smile whilst she fires the round.
Such a strong example of a good pop song, everything just works with this track. Simple, but effective, instrumentation. A ridiculously catchy melody and a chorus that shines the brightest.
Having just released a remix of this track, I’d urge anyone to check out that but first and foremost, listen to the original. It WILL be worth it.
