It’s wonderful to have you with us today… Tell us a little about where you come from and how you got into music?
I come from Beringen, a quiet village in northern Switzerland, very close to Schaffhausen.
I’ve already experienced quite a bit before I really turned to music. At 48, I’m probably considered a somewhat older newcomer, but I firmly believe that you can only sing about life if you’ve truly lived through its highs and lows. At the beginning of 2024, music became my therapy and my authentic voice. I started writing down the unvarnished reality of my experiences, sat down at the piano, and simply let the melodies flow.
What is the live music scene in Schaffhausen like right now?
It’s small, charming, and vibrant. We have legendary venues like the Kammgarn and the world-class “Stars in Town” festival, which attracts international stars to our historic old town every summer.
Is there anyone here we should keep an eye on (besides you, of course)?
Keep an eye on the producers who are shaping the music scene behind the scenes here in Switzerland. My producer, Deean Andreas Utzinger from Dübendorf, has an incredible feel for dynamics and transforms raw, emotional ideas into vast soundscapes.
Do you think it’s easy to let your circumstances control you?
That happens easily when you allow routine and circumstances to dictate your well-being. My childhood and the 16 years I spent raising my son alone taught me resilience early on. You can either let difficult circumstances break you or use that very burden as motivation to move forward with unwavering will.
What are your goals for Novo Grey?
My biggest dream is to bring this music to the world and fill entire stadiums. Not out of vanity, but because there’s nothing more powerful than sharing an evening full of emotion, hope, and connection with thousands of people under one roof. That’s the only way to make a difference. In my eyes, true music has enormous power to change things.
Which social media platform do you prefer and why?
Instagram and YouTube. Novo Grey has a very visual identity: the round, tinted sunglasses, the black-and-white aesthetic, the lyric videos. Instagram is great for direct visual storytelling and interacting with listeners, while YouTube is the home of the music itself. Of course, things aren’t looking that rosy for me yet, but I’m just getting started.
We believe it’s essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms to introduce yourself to different target audiences. What do you think?
I completely agree. Different generations and subcultures use different platforms. If you have an authentic message of unity and resilience, you should make it accessible wherever people are looking for genuine connection. But real life still happens outside of these platforms.
How do you see the music industry today?
There’s far too much slick, soulless pop music produced solely for fleeting algorithms. People are yearning for unadulterated honesty, authentic guitars, and genuine emotions. The industry needs more working-class voices that fearlessly speak the truth.
What do you think of AI-generated music?
For me, it’s about hybrid creation and using modern technology as a tool, not as a replacement for the human soul. AI can help create instrumental arrangements, but the real story, the chords, the lyrics, the vocals, and the human heartbeat behind every word have to come directly from the artist and the people playing the instruments. That’s where the magic happens.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned recently on your musical journey?
Patience and clarity. When a song is honest, people sense it immediately, no matter where in the world they live. They also sense how much work goes into a song. People often think it’s easy work, but it’s not.
What are you listening to on repeat these days?
Classic British rock and Britpop. John Lennon has been my lifelong idol, so The Beatles are definitely among my favorite bands. Also, the big 90s anthems from Oasis and The Verve, and timeless rock with powerful, catchy choruses.
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
My debut single is called “My Life Is You.”
It’s an authentic, cinematic ode to unconditional love and absolute devotion. It captures that profound moment when you find the person who truly gives you support in life and with whom you’re ready to weather any storm together.
What was the recording process like?
Direct, collaborative, and fast-paced. And hard work.
I took the raw song ideas, chords, and lyrics to producer Deean in Dübendorf. We clicked immediately. The goal was to transform inner pain and silence into a vast, industrial-vintage soundscape.
Now that it’s finished, would you change anything?
Not a single thing. It’s an authentic snapshot of who I am and where this journey begins.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with the world?
Hold on to hope, no matter how dark the night may be. Love, peace, and true community will always prevail. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.
