Friday night’s hot ticketed event took place in the Northern Quarter, the basement of Lost Weekend was THE place to be and played host to artist Stephen Lynn’s (Dionysus Art) third major exhibition, two years after his last and certainly one to remember. P.L.U.R. was a showcase of solid graft in the form of vibrant paintings of well-known musicians, vibrant, glittery-grit emblazoned with slogans and Lynn’s trademark wit.
The exhibition was accompanied by established DJ’s including Jon Dasilva and a guest appearance from the queen of Manchester, Rowetta. Both were well recieved with some classic house music spun by Dasilva and a little later on, Rowetta stunned the crowd with her powerful vocals which certainly added a little extra sparkle to what was a triumphant night for Lynn.
The artwork was a testament to Lynn’s astute awareness of popular culture, spanning decades, with a nod to the past thirty years right up to the present day, from Kate Moss to Yungblud. The work has hidden Easter eggs amongst the multicolour chaos, that allows the viewer to take a deeper look into the mind of Stephen Lynn. There are no gimmicks here as each piece is carefully crafted, and is a far cry from the lesser quality ‘pop-art’ rip offs that saturate the art market.
Lynn knows how to put on an event, he is meticulous in the planning, and has an eye for detail that others simply lack. The location was perfect, a little bit sleazy, effortlessly cool and dark which complimented the nature of the work. Lynn has insisted this will be his last exhibition with three under his belt, but I know that many attendees on Friday will hope this is not the case! Long live Dionysus Art!
