Paul Fletcher and The Dukes – In The Blink Of An Eye

Tales of romance, the highs and lows, the ups and downs, this new album covers just about all of it. ‘In The Blink Of An Eye’ tells a story of love through a journey of 11 indie-pop-rock tracks. I can’t say this is a groundbreaking, genre-bending new album, but Paul Fletcher & The Dukes have certainly pushed themselves to produce a cohesive and exciting record.

Opening with the stand out single ‘Starts And Ends With You’, this starts the album with an upbeat and catchy tone that sets up the following songs nicely.

If there’s one thing that draws attention, above all else, it’s the soaring vocals provided by the Sheffield singer-songwriter that remain consistent throughout. However, what Paul has done well is to not be overly consistent in every other aspect of the music.

He has avoided the danger of making an album so cohesive that it all sounds like one long song. Although there is an indie-rock core to the record, elements of other genres are thrown into the mix to bring some dynamism and a sense of progression. A notable example is the 80s-sounding synth-pop tune ‘Devil In My Heart And Soul’. Paul manages to really show off his ability to mix up his own style.

The title track comes as the penultimate song of the set. A catchy and heartfelt indie-rock tune with a crying guitar solo, it sums up pretty well the message Paul has tried to convey. The lyrics ‘I can’t find the words to say, they never come out right anyway’ make it obvious that he has chosen to express how he is feeling through his music instead.

Sometimes, in songs like ‘Starts And Ends With You’ and ‘Bright City Lights’, the lyrics were perfectly playful and simple. However, I think other tracks fall slightly short by being convoluted and cliché. In particular, ‘Chasing The Sun’ would have benefitted so much from keeping things nice and simple.

Closing the album comes the song ‘Number 58’. A much softer track compared to the rest of the record, it eases the listener to the end of what is the first of three albums Paul has signed to write and record.

‘In The Blink Of An Eye’ creates a buzz around the name Paul Fletcher & The Dukes, with the hope for even more in the future.
