The mighty Modfather returned to Manchester last week as part of his current UK tour, a continuation of his 66th birthday celebrations. It feels like Weller has been on tour all year, not that anyone is complaining and it is always an absolute privilege to see this rock icon perform live.
You are never shortchanged at a Weller gig, with the former Jam and Style Council star on fine form and in fine voice at this latest run of shows. This was another sell out event with Manchester always providing Weller with a warm welcome, which he reciprocated as he addressed the audience between tracks,
The Modfather was in a reflective mood this evening, dedicating track three ‘That Pleasure’ to the victims of the Genocide in Gaza. The next few tracks were some Style Council classics, ‘My Ever Changing Moods’ which drew a large cheer from the audience, followed by ‘Have You Ever Had it Blue’.
Weller has such an extensive back catalogue you cannot always guarantee he will cover your favourite as there simply isn’t time, but this evening the setlist was packed full of his best work, ‘Broken Stones’, ‘The Changing Man’ and the all Jam generous second encore with undoubtedly his most well known tracks ‘That’s Entertainment’ and one of my favourite tracks of all time ‘Town Called Malice’. A double whammy to complete this stellar evening of live music.
Weller and his band are currently on their UK tour and finish things off this week down south, so should you be in the area I would highly recommend you grab a ticket whilst you can, you certainly will not be disappointed. At 66 it does not look like Mr Weller is slowing down any time soon.
