PIL LIVE IN WARRINGTON – WHAT HAPPENED?

A Tuesday evening trip to Warrington’s Parr Hall, a venue steeped in history and a debut visit for me. Such an iconic hall was this evening playing host to the most punk of frontmen, only the former Sex Pistol and now PIL frontman Mr John Lydon.

Continuing his notorious ways as frontman of PIL and a tad less raucous but no less full of it, Mr Lydon was a force to be reckoned with this evening. The set was punchy with Lydon’s signature vocals reverberating through the crowd, who were impressively dressed in their finest stripes/safety pins/piercings and many sex pistols t shirts.

Staying fairly central throughout the gig, Lydon made up for lack of movement in wild facial expressions and hand gestures, pointing at members of the crowd and of course that trademark snarl made many appearances,

The set list included some fan favourites, and a selection of covers, including ‘World Destruction’ by Time Zone, and a little later in the set a left field cover ‘Open Up’. The highlights for me were ‘Death Disco’ and the encore which included the track ‘Rise’.

This tour is named ‘This is not the Last Tour’ which certainly suggests that Lydon has plenty of unfinished business to adhere to. You cannot fault Lydon’s stage presence, the word icon is bandied about too much these days, but this evening we were most definitely in the presence of one of the musical greats. Long may John Lydon, and of course PIL continue.
