A fairly chilly Tuesday evening down Oxford Road did not deter fans of Michael C Hall’s Princess Goes. As I descended the stairway of the students union (rammed with freshers as it is of course that time of year) I was greeted with a much milder climate and some very over exuberant fans of the band, and most likely the TV series ‘Dexter’ of which Hall plays the titular character.
Some fans had already been privy to a private acoustic set and signing prior to the main gig. Eventually, Michael C Hall appeared amongst the smoke and gloomy lighting to start the set, followed by his band consisting of Pete Yanowitz, and Matt Katz-Bohen.
The genre bending band which mixes electronica and dance, clearly draws influences from 80’s disco. Hall’s voice is deep, with elements of Bowie and when mixed with a dramatic stage presence is quite something to behold.
The set list was compiled of songs from their albums ‘Come of Age’ and ‘Thanks for Coming’ with highlights including their latest single ‘Blur’ a synthy number with a retro new-wave element with a deep bass line that reverberates around this intimate venue.
Tonight’s gig sees the start of their UK tour, having recently played a hometown gig in New York just last week. I. believe many fans this evening were here to see Dexter in the flesh, but I reckon many left as a fan of the band. This is certainly not a vanity project, this is the real deal with three talented musicians and a tight set list, bigger venues beckon.
