What made you decide to start the band?

We’d been gigging for a few years in other bands and decided it’d be really cool to do something together, so we wrote our first song as a group and Artio was born.

Introduce us all to the members and your musical history?

Artio is made up of Rae Brazill, Ieuan Jones and Rob Arkle. We’ve all grown up in households full of music, so if we all weren’t in bands by our teens I think our families would be very confused!

It’s been a bit of a wild last year, how have you guys managed to pass time and stay sane during lockdown?

We really just cracked down on music and content, we have recorded 3 EPS over the lockdowns, releasing one in September 2020. Also really engaging with our amazing little community! Having Friday Night Film Clubs in our discord and doing gaming streams on Twitch. If we can’t tour, we’ll find another way to be there and entertain our fans!

How positive are you feeling now we are in 2021?

We’re feeling super positive about this year as gigs are making a comeback! We’ve got our UK Tour booked for Autumn, lots of releases scheduled and can hopefully get back to festivals and our regular routine as a band again!

How has 2020  effected your mental health?

2020 has been hard for everyone, all of us included. For Hol it was a great time to begin to understand her mind, get some very well needed diagnosis and start on medication to help with her mental illnesses. Ieuan and Rob have played many many hours of Rocket League, escapism can be groovy sometimes!

How are you feeling now the road map has been announced and live gig can return?

Super excited about the roadmap, just hopefully the gammon heads will behave until everyone’s been vaccinated and we can go back to a new kinda normal. But you know they won’t, so we’re cautiously optimistic but not banking on it happening as soon as Bojo has said.

What’s your favourite song right now from another band currently on the Leeds circuit?

Definitely ‘Talk’ by For You The Moon, such great guys making some banging tunes.

What support is out there for new artists in Leeds ?

There’s amazing promoters like Eva Davies of Grrls Too, who creates inclusive spaces for everyone in the Leeds scene, not just the indie boy bands! And Toby Womack of Futuresound, who’s an amazing support, getting local acts on cracking line-ups, and being an all round darling. Also the team over at BBC Introducing in West Yorkshire, who’ve supported us since the very start of Artio and of course, our amazing label MonomythRecords have supported a whole family of local artists too.

Who is inspiring you at the minute on the Leeds unsigned scene?

The band that have always and will always inspire us are The Elephant Trees, Leeds natives, all round legends, incredible songwriters and performers.

What useless talent do you have / party trick?

I (Hol) can do an excellent Perry the Platypus impression and also can sing the entire Horrible Histories Kings and Queens song. Useless? maybe. But top quality entertainment? Oh yes.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

I think the mot fun we’ve had on stage was our 2020 Leeds headlines, having our fans scream our songs back at us, sell it out within a week and dance around with us was unbelievable.  We can’t wait to get back to it all soon.

What was the worst experience on stage?

The worst experience was probably us all being ill on stage on a tour date last year, having driven in a storm and all incredibly tired, to play to a half full venue was a bit shit. But we’re grateful for any stage time so we just laughed it off and did what we could!

Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?

We’re all massive nerds.

Name a four-piece band made up of legends – who would be in it? (drummer, bass, lead singer etc)

The Wiggles.

If you could play any music festival which would it be?

Leeds and Reading. Like, here, take our kidneys. Take our souls if you want. We wanna play Leeds and Reading brooooo.

Best gig you’ve been to that you weren’t playing?

Oo I can’t choose. Too many.

What makes you stand out as a band?

We don’t really TRY to stick out, we just do what we want and make music that we love.

Tell us about a time when you had a proper reytlaugh while you were all together?

Definitely any of our Baking videos on our Youtube.

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

We all have different favourites but Basement Dance is super fun and gets the crowd going right away.

I hear you have a new single brewing, what can you tell us about it?

It’s one of our favourites off of our upcoming EP, Shapeshifter: As Above. It’s the first song Hol has written about being openly bisexual since coming in 2020. It’s about falling in love with someone you’ll never see again, being infatuated with them and just wanting to know their name before life tears you apart forever.

How was the recording process given the various restrictions the UK has been under of late?

Our recording process hasn’t changed at all as we self produce everything, we record individually in our own homes and send the stems to Ieuan who produces everything, then we send it off for mastering and then it’s done.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

Our plans are top secret, but they’re very exciting! We’re on tour in autumn and we can’t wait to see you all again!
