RGM Introducing – Blue River

Hiya folks take a seat, what made you decide to start a band?

Perran – Noel Gallagher, he said once in an interview that anyone can learn the guitar and start a band, that single interview gave me the confidence to pick up the guitar and give it a go. I’m shit at pretty much everything else so it’s my only hope.

Introduce us all to the members, how did the band get together?

Perran Nicholls, singer. – I’m the talented one and the glue that holds this ship together, then we have Marc Willoughby, lead guitarist and singer met him on Plenty Of Fish, Na jokes, met him on a site called “Join my band” and he did so all good.  Brett buddy we met on Facebook when we put an ad out looking for ANOTHER drummer and bass player Adam knuckey, Marc knew him from school when they used to play marbles together or something… Top lads.

What is the unsigned scene in Cornwall like at the minute?

Perran – It’s been simmering for years, Bands have been flirting with the idea of making Cornwall a Force on the music scene but not ever quite managing it, or wanting it. Cornwall has working-class areas, but we seem to have very nice college bands and rich daddy bands down here, and there isn’t that natural grit and passion working-class kids give you. I think right now there’s a scene happening and it could explode at any time, but if it’s about money, money talks, and the rich daddy bands get first dibs while the working class bands get ignored really. And how the fuck have we let that happen? Apparently we want things on a plate these days and we don’t care where it’s sourced from.

What good bands are coming out of Cornwall at the minute?

Marc – There are many great bands down here. Penny’s Eyes, Oh! Majester, Sam Richardson, Kazak, Guy Haradon, The Landscape Society to name a few.
Perran – Camborne Town Band (they have a cracking brass section)

What’s your favourite song right now from another band?

Adam – “Bad Decisions” from The Strokes’ new album is a cool song, and a good return to form

What support is out there for new artists in Cornwall?

Perran – Hmm there is more rehearsal spaces about these days and some top venues along with top promoters who give as much love to homegrown artists as possible, AJ at Inbetween Days, Kieran at Clunk Magazine Jamie at Live Sound Promotions, and Old Bakery to name a few, also not forgetting local reporters like Lee Trewhela, ( who actually doesn’t ever seem to put us in his endless lists of “cool artists” 😏 ) but has stated our new tune is our best work yet!  Also, I should mention Craig Taylor Broad, he is a local photographer and has been making us look good for two years, his work is mega, so we take him pretty much everywhere we go haha! But yeah, I like to think we all help each other out. Some more shout outs – Daniel Philbrooks at Shirt and Tie Productions, Mawgan Lewis at Purple Knife and Tony Gilliam at Kernow Designs go check them out.

Who is inspiring you at the min?

Perran – No one and nothing. I don’t need it. It’s always pissing down with songs in my head and I don’t need umbrellas know what I mean?  ☔️

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

Brett – I generally have fun at every gig we do as I always vibe on playing live. But festival gigs are the winner for me!
Perran – I have fun when I get off the stage, know what I’m saying? 😉

What was the worst experience on stage?

Perran – I fell through one and almost broke my leg. In Soho in London. Someone was drip-feeding me tequila beforehand, but that actually had nothing to do with it. It was our then bass player fault, he jumped around so much he moved the fucking stage, so suddenly there’s a massive gap right next to me, I took a step to the left, and boom, I’m gone. I think the tequila was to blame why I blamed the crowd for it though!

Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?
Brett – Likes surfing, But can’t swim at all.
Marc – Loves taking Cats for walks.
Adam – Really really really REALLY likes roads.
Perran – Can actually tell the time.

Four piece band made up of legends – who would be in it? (drummer, bass, lead singer etc)

Marc – Phil Lynott
Paul McCartney
Prince
Roger Taylor

Who sings? That’s the fun.

If you could play any music festival which would it be?

Adam – Isle of Wight Festival- it was the first large festival I went to, and it has a cool, laid-back vibe.

Best gig you’ve been to that you weren’t playing?

Adam – Muse at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London

What goes into your favourite sandwich?

Brett – Chicken is life!

What advice would you give someone going into the music industry?

Marc – Play it.
Perran – yeah play it or get played!

What advise would you give your younger selfs?

Marc – Buy more pedals.
Brett – I’d always say to learn every style of music you can as it always comes in handy up the line. Play in bands that make you laugh and come out of a gig laughing. Nothing worst than being in a band that gives you no enjoyment.
Adam – Pick up the bass guitar, or whatever instrument, as soon as possible and join a band!
Perran – Keep the faith baby

Whats your biggest achievement as a band?

Perran – Radio 1, and we are gonna be supporting Shaun Ryder at the end of the year.

What makes you stand out as a band?

Marc – Charisma
Perran – My big toe

Right now, whats pissing you off the most? (Cant say the virus 🙂

Marc – The Government
Perran – Fucking every c**t going

Tell us about a time when you had a proper reyt laugh while you were all together?

Marc – Played a gig in where the stage fell apart below Perran’s legs.
Brett – Probably when we played the main stage at tunes in the dunes and after we played we had a few beers and then for some reason paid marc to army crawl under the stage and back whilst we all watched

I hear you have a new single brewing, what can you tell us about it?

Perran – It’s been dubbed our best tune yet by the press and fans, it’s probably the song I’m most proud of, I wrote it in a different way and I wanted it to stay true to the demo as much as possible, i use chords Iv never used before, and I sing oddly init, almost like I’m pissed someone kindly pointed out, yeah I love it, the words, the delivery, it’s my favourite. Just wanna play it live now.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Perran – I blame 5G
