Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide to start the band / become a soloist?
Well, I started writing rap songs with my friends back in High School from like 2011-2013. I was just writing music for the fun of it. I wasn’t really trying to make something out of it at the time. But after high school I moved to Clifton in 2014-2015 near downtown Cincinnati. It’s a little college town where all the University of Cincinnati students live. I didn’t really go to college though, I just worked and figured I would find a skill like welding or something down the road. But when I moved to Clifton I started to write indie songs in my bedroom. But these songs I wrote were just for myself. I wouldn’t show any of my friends or family what I was working on cause I thought it was so bad but for some reason I still enjoyed listening to my shitty riffs and chord progressions. It was just something different for me at the time so I think that part of it made me really enjoy listening to myself. I ended up writing around 25-30 songs and only released one of them during that period. It only got like 100 streams or something on Soundcloud. I figured that my music career was done and the funny part was that it hadn’t even started yet. But long story short, my mom moved to LA as a contract nurse. Six months later when she came to visit my family back in Cincy, she told me that I should move back with her and try a career in music. I thought it was crazy at first but honestly why the fuck not try and see what happens? I moved three months before the pandemic. During those three months I wrote about ten songs. I believe 2-3 of those songs are going to be on the new EP as well, titled “Pitted”. But once the pandemic hit and I realized that I was gonna be stuck in LA, I decided that I was gonna finally show the world some of my work, and that’s how Lazy Daze started.
Introduce us all to the members and your musical history?
Lazy Daze as of right consists of just me. I write/compose/record/perform every single part of a Lazy Daze song. Whatever you hear is all by me baby! My mom forced me to take piano lessons growing up in grade school. I say made because I never wanted to take them, all I wanted to do was to be outside playing with my buddies outside. I rebelled and picked up my first guitar around the 7th grade I believe. I don’t really remember when I started playing guitar. But I never took guitar lessons, I would just learn by ear or play along to tabs. I loved playing Blink-182 power chords and the simple riffs of The Strokes. Keys definitely aren’t my first choice though, guitar isn’t even my first choice either. I love playing the bass. I am definitely a bass player at heart. I just love getting into the rhythm of a song. After a few years of playing the guitar I started jamming with some friends. When I saw my first bass in person I was immediately intrigued. I couldn’t stop playing it during the first session. After jamming with my buddy I jokingly asked him if I could trade my guitar for his bass. Thankfully he said yes and the rest is history.
How did you hear about RGM coming from the USA?
Jack, my manager, has been working with me since the beginning of this year. He did some searching for music blogs/sites that were popular among independent artists and came across RGM. We were also looking for more exposure overseas so it was a way to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.
Cool thanks for finding us, spread the word!
How positive are you feeling now restrictions are loosening?
Honestly I don’t have a great answer for this question. It’s a bit weird how fast everything is opening up again, even with the pandemic still going on. I just hope this shit doesn’t come back because we are being too careless. I am happy though that my music is coming out as the world is re-opening though, because it seems like I chose the right time to start making and releasing music for people to hear.
How much are you looking forward to playing live?
It’s all I want to do. It’s one of the main reasons why I wanted to start a band. My biggest inspirations are all artist who are incredible performers as well. Even still to this day seeing my favorite bands play live makes me want nothing more than to experience playing a live show for fans. I’ve never played any Lazy Daze songs live so I’m definitely looking forward to it.
Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?
lol no not really. Not a big conspiracy theory guy. If anything I am scared to get into them because I bet some of that shit is too crazy to comprehend and I already got enough shit going on in my life.
What support is out there for new artists in Cincinnati / LA ?
I love Cincy. With all my heart. It’s my home and I will forever cherish all my time spent there. But when it comes to the music scene, there really isn’t much going on. That’s just my personal experience though. I’m sure there are plenty of artists in Cincinnati that are doing just fine and have support from fans. But for me, I didn’t really have that support from the city except from my family. LA is a totally different story though. For me, and I say me because everyone has different experiences in life. But for me, the music scene in LA is the place to be. Most of my listeners are from LA and I literally know like two people outside of my work life lol. And ever since I moved to LA I’ve been getting more support from my friends and more people from Cincy too. I love LA so much. I feel blessed to be able to live here and to be able to make and release my music in this wonderful city that I call my new home.
Who is inspiring you at the minute on the Cincinnati / LA unsigned scene?
My buddies that I used to write and jam with, Tony and Avery from Cincy. Us three wrote a few songs together when we all lived in Covington, KY. They still make music together I believe, under the name, Smile Group. They have solo stuff as well. Tony’s is Sweet Peach. Avery’s is Panic Reality. Both of them are seriously so talented and it’s so easy working with them. I miss them and I believe if I didn’t move to LA that we would definitely have a band together by now. And most of my favorite artists from LA are signed so I can’t really think of a band or artist at the moment that isn’t signed.
What useless party trick /talent do you have/?
Very basic but opening a beer bottle with a lighter. But I swear I’m a fun guy at a party regardless of having no party tricks!
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
Back when I used to live in Clifton I did a rap show at a college bar called, Mr. Sushi. It was so much fun I had a freaking blast. Seeing all my buddies rap along to my lyrics was so dope. Also was able to sneak by underage brother at the time into the bar too so that was cool.
What was the worst experience on stage?
So during the beginning of that first show I did the mic wasn’t working in the beginning. I started speaking into it and no one could hear me lol. But we were able to fix it and it was smooth sailing from there.
Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?
Well as of right now I am still solo and I don’t have any live band members yet. But I will be looking for live band members here shortly and will start practicing for shows in the future. But I definitely want a girl in the band, it doesn’t matter what instrument she plays. I love girls in bands, it’s just such a vibe for me.
Tell us a funny story from backstage?
No shows yet :,)
If you had to describe your band to an alien how would you describe them?
“Let’s go to the beach. I’m gonna bring some beers and a joint and we are just gonna listen to my music.. Just trust me it’s gonna vibe.”
Which one of the band is the most unpredictable and why?
I have my moments.
Which one of the band is the biggest nightmare? (Just a bit of fun)
At times, I am my own worst enemy.
You have one phone call and you have been locked up for a crime you didn’t commit? Which member would you call first?
Screw calling a member lol I’m calling my lawyer!
Name a four piece band made up of legends – who would be in it? (drummer, bass, lead singer etc)
OMG I LOVE THIS QUESTION! Such a hard question too.
Drummer – Ringo Starr (The Beatles)
Bass – Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) or Nikolai Fraiture (The Strokes)
Guitarist – Dick Dale
Singer – Hayley Williams (Paramore)
If you could play any music festival which would it be?
Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati.
Whats your biggest achievement as a band/Artist?
Having over 25k streams in total. Only up from here! Just getting started, so much more to accomplish.
What makes you stand out as a band/Artist?
I think my story, moving from Cincinnati to LA and trying my best to make this happen. Also the fact that I make all my music by myself, I’m really proud of that. I’m also an Asian-American in the indoe space, and that is still not very common unfortunately so I’m trying to open the door for more artists that look like me and come from similar backgrounds. Another thing that could make me stand out is working as a Patient Transporter during the pandemic, on top of keeping up with the Lazy Daze work. It was very eye-opening seeing first hand what the pandemic was doing to families and communities. It made me really appreciate how lucky me and my family have been during this whole thing, and I’m grateful for that.
Right now, whats pissing you of the most? (Cant say the virus )
Trying to figure out how to make a TikTok. I love watching the videos on there but when it comes to making a TikTok I have no idea what I’m doing.
Tell us about a time when you had a proper reyt laugh while you were all together?
The last time I had a huge belly laugh I was watching John Mulaney with my Dad and my Brother. I love stand up comedy so much. I watch comedians on youtube every single day! I have sooooo many favorite comedians. But right now the ones I am watching the most are, Aries Spears, Sam Morril, and Joe List, plus many more. But my favorite comedian of all time is Patrice O’Neal. RIP.
Whats your favorite song to play live and why?
I haven’t played live yet but I do practice my songs all the time. They are all my favorite to play. But if I had to pick one, I would say practicing the bass on “Killing Me” is my favorite. The bass line is so much fun to play during the chorus and I can’t help but smile every time I play it. I always imagine playing it in front of fans and I just visualize myself on the stage having such a good time and hearing all the fans cheering me on as I jam lol.
I hear you have a new single brewing, what can you tell us about it?
New EP on the way! I’ve been working really hard on it. A lot of time on it. Put my heart and soul into this. Three new tracks and three familiar ones that I have already released as singles. If you love beachy summer vibes then this is the EP for you. My biggest inspirations for this EP were The Beach Boys, The Cure, The Strokes, and Blink 182. Wrote some of the songs during the pandemic and they are super catchy with relatable lyrics talking about relationships and the trials of living through the pandemic.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
My plans for the road ahead is finding a new place to stay. The neighborhood I am in right now isn’t the safest. I also plan on learning to speak Spanish better. Definitely need to find some band mates and to have some live shows. Now that COVID is (kinda?) over I wanna get out and meet more people. I really just want to explore LA and get the real experience that this city has to offer. I hope for nothing but good health for my family and friends as well. And hopefully with the new EP on the way I am hoping that I can gain some new fans and go on tour!!!
