Hi Lee welcome to the RGM interview lounge, take a seat, lets chat.
What made you decide to start become a soloist?
Becoming solo meant I had the final say in everything that I do and put into the music. Having been in bands and sharing ideas that don’t make it into the song can be frustrating if you have a different opinion on a certain riff or lyric and how that might work. It just gives me the chance to have more freedom in my song writing and do things exactly how I see them in my head.
It’s been a bit of a wild last year, how have you managed to pass time and stay sane during lockdown?
Boxset binged an unhealthy amount of series, walked a healthy amount of steps, exercise has been key to keeping the mental side of things strong, and basically used the time to my advantage to create the best songs and ideas I can to introduce to people!
How positive are you feeling now we are in 2021?
I’m feeling the positivity! Live music is on the way which is going to be such a massive boost, hopefully the worst is behind us.
There’s new music flying everywhere and I think everyone feels the same really just wanting to get out there and perform and get back to sort of normality!
I’m looking forward to seeing what people make of this single so yeah I’m excited for what 2021 has to offer!
How are you feeling now the road map has been announced and live gig can return?
The return of live music is massive for everyone and it’s left such a void in every one’s life so with that back on the way I’m feeling really positive that artists can get back to what they love, we can see venues packed full of energy so really excited about that, it’s needed now more than ever!
What support is out there for new artists in Liverpool ?
Social media platforms are so important to everyone and I find that Twitter has been a massive help, there are so many pages not just from Liverpool but of people with genuine interest and want to help share your posts. I also feel that all the artists coming out of the city have a sense of community where they seem to help each other with shares and comments to spread the word!
Who is inspiring you at the minute on the Liverpool unsigned scene?
There are so many good artists on the scene bringing out great stuff I’d have a list that could go on forever it’s so good to see but if I had to point out one that’s really caught my attention lately is Fiona Lennon’s single ‘A little longer !
If your fans could remember one thing about you what would it be?
That I give 110% into everything that I do and I only want to give them the best !
What useless talent do you have/ party trick?
Has to be being able to nail the best horse impression going!
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
I’d have to say it was when an old band I was in played a set at BOSS Night before it was as big as it is today, the atmosphere at those events is next level and to be a part of it and perform was just a great buzz from start to finish.
What was the worst experience on stage?
Back in my first band, we supported this band who were having their EP launch at a decent sized venue which was packed, I’d seen a band support The Enemy a week before who had a similar sounding name, so when I came to hype the band up I said the other band’s name and the loyalty from their following came in as things turned hostile, things started getting thrown, drinks were flying everywhere, abuse was flying.
Best drink to have on stage?
You can’t beat an ice-cold beer!
Tell us a funny story from backstage?
We were sat in a dressing room once having a bevy and our drummer was a barber, he’d brought clippers for some reason to make sure his fade was fresh or whatever, messed it up and spare of the moment decided to shave the lot off. The face drop when his girlfriend seen him come onstage was memorable!
Name a four piece band made up of legends – who would be in it? (drummer, bass, lead singer etc)
Bakithi Kumalo on bass- Graceland by Paul Simon is one of the greatest albums of all time and the bass on that record alone is just a massive vibe in itself!
Matt Helders on drums- He’s always stuck with me because of growing up with the Arctics and I think he puts in an absolute shift plus his falsetto backing can come in handy!
Dave Gilmour on guitar- The way his music can make you feel is some kind of superpower that’s got us all under a spell.
Annie Lennox – Just got everything hasn’t she, incredible songwriting, a voice that makes an impact, her stage presence and character, she’s just amazing!
What advice would you give someone going into the music industry?
Be patient, it’s so hard trying to get off the ground, everyone has setbacks and not get a reply about your submissions but that’s no bad reflection on you, there’s just so much music out there it’s easy for it to go unnoticed, just stick at it and have confidence in your music!
What makes you stand out as an Artist?
My lyrics are from the heart and I think that everyone can relate to them, they’re honest lyrics about topics that people can get behind.
I know I’m not much to look at and don’t stand out on the page but I like to think my lyrics make up for that!
I hear you have a new single brewing, what can you tell us about it?
The song is basically a thank you letter that focuses on a childhood friendship that is still an important part of life while facing everyday struggles. It has that obvious nod to Liverpool music with hints of The La’s and The Coral.
How was the recording process given the various restrictions the UK has been under of late?
Luckily enough I managed to get in the studio before the most recent lockdown happened, obviously, restrictions were still tight but we managed to get most of it boxed then the rest was basically done at home by Jay Gaugler who has produced the track, getting various mixes done until it was polished!
What are your plans for the year ahead ?
I’m focused on getting this single out there and for it to reach as many new people as possible and to introduce some more new music and get on the gigging circuit because it’s been too long!
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Thank you to everyone that has supported me and continues to do so and for everyone to be kind to each other!
