RGM Introducing – LUKA

Hiya, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide to make music?

I decided to pursue music because I enjoy the whole process of writing and recording my own songs and wanted to see if I could get anywhere with it. I also really enjoy storytelling both through music and visually, which is something I’m able to explore as a musician.

Introduce yourself and your musical history?

My name is Luka, I’m 23 and I like spooky stuff.

I grew up going to music festivals, performing in choirs, competitions and teaching myself different instruments through YouTube. I studied Music Performance and Production at uni which was mostly pretty fun. I wrote some weird songs as a child and didn’t write anything close to good until the last couple of years, though most of the good ones are about fictional characters I relate to.

It’s been a bit of a wild last year, how have you managed to pass time and stay sane during lockdown?

I’ve been working on music, writing and recording lots of songs in my bedroom. That’s definitely helped pass some of the time! Though I’d say X Files and Doctor Who have been my true lockdown saviours. I’d be lost without them.

How are you feeling now the road map has been announced and live gig can return?

Feeling pretty good about it! Very excited to be able to go see gigs again and also play them myself. Though crowds also stress me out so I’ve kind of enjoyed the smaller capacity, social distance gigs I’ve been to.

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

I definitely believe, or want to believe in Aliens and that whole conspiracy. I think it would be super fun if aliens had been coming to earth for years and the public just didn’t know about it. Hopefully one day we’ll meet the aliens. Maybe we already have…

What’s your favourite song right now from another band currently on the Leeds circuit?

Flatmoon have a great new song out called Demise. I’m loving that at the moment. It also has really fun music video! Would 100% recommend.

What support is out there for new artists in Leeds ?

Monomyth Records is a label that supports lots of new and upcoming artists in Leeds. They’ve really helped me to create and release songs I’m happy with and have helped promote and get them heard by people.

What useless talent do you have/ party trick?

I have very bendy ankles and can turn my feet really far backwards, that freaks people out. I can also smell ladybirds, but not sure how that would go down at a party.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

I’ve had very few experiences on stage, so I’d say my funnest experience was generally just being on a stage and playing songs. Was cool to have people listening to things I’d written and being nice about them.

What was the worst experience on stage?

Similarly, to the previous answer, I’d say my worst experience on stage was also just generally being on stage and playing my songs. Whilst cool to be able to do it, was also very scary. Though I’m sure it’ll get less scary with practise. Or I hope so anyway.

Tell us something that you think people would be surprised about?

I’m not sure there’s much that would surprise people about me. But maybe the fact that, though I love spooky stuff, I am also very scared of the dark. I also do archery.

Best drink to have on stage?

A lovely cuppa tea.

Who is the biggest named band you have played with?

Artio! They’re a super cool band.

Tell us a funny story from backstage?

I’ve been backstage somewhere once for about 5 minutes. I think it was quite an average 5 minutes really, I wish I’d done something embarrassing I could tell you. Maybe next time.

Tell me about your new single and how it came about?

I wrote my new single in summer 2020 whilst in full isolation during COVID. I had a lot of time to sit around, think and write stuff. I wrote this one really quickly whilst going through some sad unrequited crush stuff that I was dealing pretty badly with.

I recorded the demo for the song in my bedroom, which I then sent over to Bob at Monomyth records who helped me make it into a proper song. We’ve been working on it for a while, trying to get it exactly how I’d wanted it. I’m glad it’s finally out and people seem to be liking it!

How was the recording process given the various restrictions the UK has been under of late?

I’ve only ever recorded songs in my bedroom, so it wasn’t actually too different from what I’d been doing before COVID hit. It’s always slightly frustrating recording a song in a house full of people, as any small sound or voice is picked up on the recording and I have to re-record a lot. I’m also a perfectionist, so this proves to be very stressful for me. But it’s ok.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

I’m planning to see friends and maybe travel around the uk a bit when things start to open up. I’m also hoping to start a Masters degree studying psychology which should be interesting! And of course lots of new music coming soon too. Some exciting stuff!

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Well I was out today and passed over 1000 people protesting having to wear masks and shouting at people who were choosing to wear them. I’d just like to remind people that there are so many worse things happening in the world that need attention and need changing. Please focus your attention on the people who need it right now and put your efforts into helping make the world better. Look after yourselves and be nice.
