RGM Introducing – Nicole Chambers

Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide to start a band / become an artist?

My high school teacher was the one who pushed me to go to college for jazz vocals. From there I met some of my best friends and some of the featured musicians on the album.

So tell me a little bit about you and what you like doing for fun?

I am Canadian singer-songwriter from Brampton, Ontario who loves RnB music just as much as I love binge-watching The Office.

Whats one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

I would have to say, “So tell me about yourself?”I am more of a quiet modest person and I feel uncomfortable talking about myself.

What is the unsigned scene in Brampton, Canada  like at the minute?

I believe that it is growing, flourishing and I am all here for it! There is so much talent that comes from Brampton like Roy Woods, Alessia Cara and WondaGurl.

What good bands are coming out of Brampton, Canada at the minute?

ZenSoul, Anika Marie, TOBi, Haviah Mighty, Ray Hmnd, and MixTapper.

What support is out there for new artists in Brampton, Canada ?

The support has been growing, due to local artists speaking out about the lack of support they have received from the city. However, the ones who have really been pushing for artists would be Shade who is founder of Brampton’s Very Own. Her platform puts on events within the city, for local artists to showcase their talent. Roshanie is founder of Solidarity In Sound, which is a platform supporting equality of women within the music industry. She also has her weekly show Culture Calls, where she interviews artists and gets to know their artistic journey.

How easy or difficult do you find picking up new fans to come to your gigs?

Well in a pandemic it is kind of hard to have a lot of live shows, but with virtual shows it has been a new great tool to connect to different audiences. As long as you put yourself out on the socials, and be consistent with your sound, the right people always find you.

Who is inspiring you at the minute?

I always draw inspiration from Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, but lately I’ve been loving what Jamila Woods, Lucky Daye, SiR and Lianne La Havas have been creating.

If your fans could remember one thing about you what would it be?

My sense of humour.

What useless talent do you have/ party trick?

I am double jointed in my left thumb

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

GXRLS Need Love live show. It was such a packed fun filled night. I was able to share the stage with other amazing female vocalists such as Leila Dey and Gimmemar. I felt so humbled to be part of it.

What was the worst experience on stage?

The time the mic chord unplugged from my mic…I was so embarrassed, but luckily my guitar player and the audience were kind about it and cheered me on!

Best drink to have on stage?

I am all about staying focused when I perform so I only have water.

Tell me about your new album and  how it came about?

Voice Of A Virgo is an album that is about 3 years in the making. I reflect on self-love, heartbreak and most importantly listening to my inner voice. I have silenced my emotions for too long, and through the creation of this album I finally found it.
